A built-in microwave oven combo is an ideal space-saving solution for those who have smaller kitchens, regardless of whether they are in a house or apartment. They can save the space that would otherwise be occupied by separate appliances, and also reduce energy consumption. They are more energy efficient than traditional wall-mounted ovens and provide a more efficient way to cook. They can also be used to cook food and warm meals. This means that there is less need for other appliances like toasters or warming plates.

DOE conducts various analyses when evaluating the possibility of amending energy conservation standards. These include technology and market assessments screening analyses, engineering analyses and national impact analysis (NIA). In this SNOPR, DOE will draw on its engineering analysis of microwave ovens to determine what degree of efficiency improvements are feasible for this product type.

In the engineering analysis, DOE will compare the design parameters of a microwave against a set of energy performance objectives. The engineering analysis will then determine the maximum improvement in energy efficiency that is technologically feasible based on the most advanced microprocessor-controlled model available on the market or in working prototypes, or the maximum reduction in energy consumption that is technically achievable with the current technologies available for this product class.

As part of the NIA, DOE will evaluate the effects on consumers for each product category, including lifecycle cost savings, and simple payback period ("PBP"). DOE will employ the Government Regulatory Impact Model, with an adaptation for microwavable ovens, to calculate the industry's net present value (NPV).

The impact on manufacturers will be evaluated also and DOE will use a modified version of its Industry Cash Flow model that has been modified for this product type to calculate the manufacturing NPV. Finally, DOE will consider the potential impact on small business manufacturers and other manufacturer subgroups to identify any that could be affected in a different way by these proposals.

DOE will also examine whether the test procedure for microwave ovens needs to be updated in order to include active mode power consumption and a possible integrated energy use metric. Currently, test procedures only cover standby mode power consumption.

Design

Wall ovens depend on evenly circulating hot air while microwaves use waves to cause water molecules in food items to vibrate and produce heat. Combination wall units combine both appliances into one unit, which is ideal for securing space in the kitchen and offering a sleek modern aesthetic. It is important to take into consideration your budget and goals before deciding on a combination wall oven. Some of the combo ovens we rated have performance or design issues.
